The Chicken Whisperer

He's good with cats, he's good with dogs, and now Noah's good with chickens!

We got 3 Red Stars and 1 Americana chick today from Tony & Amanda in Parker. They have a bunch of chickens and we have been getting great free-range eggs from them for a few months now. The Red Stars are 100% guaranteed to be hens and the Americanas are 94% guaranteed to be hens, so I figured taking the chance on 1 rooster was ok.

In these pictures, Noah has a heating pad on his lap and he's "putting the chicks to sleep" with his hand. Heat and a little dark are all these chicks need to go to sleep in about 3 seconds. As you can see in the 3rd picture, one of the little Red Stars was so relaxed, that her foot was sticking straight up!

We have the coop built and all set to go for when these girls are old enough to go outside. I guess they could be outside now, with their heat lamp, but we really want them to be our pets too, so they are inside for a while. I told Noah that they will think he's their "Mommy" and he's A-ok with that! :o)

Noah has already chosen the names, but we're saving naming the 3 Red Stars until we can tell them apart. The one Americana is named Bok. The other 3 will be named April, Fort and Fun-o. No idea where those names came from, but Noah spouted them out like he had been thinking it over for a while.

They'll lay in 5 or 6 months. 1 egg per day, per Red Star and 1 egg every day or every other day from the Americana. I can't wait!!!

Marshmallow Geometry

We went to Liese's house today for a Marshmallow Geometry class. She started by reading the Greedy Triangle; a story about a triangle who always wanted to be a different shape, but then decided it was good to be a triangle afterall.

Noah heard that he could eat the marshmallows that he used to build, so he started by stuffing a ton of them on 1 toothpick and eating them all off. I finally got him to build an actual something and then we forgot it! Luckily, Liese had mercy on his little marshmallow craving soul and let him take some extras home and at least we have this picture to remember the house he built! :o)

Mommy, I just said a prayer to Jesus...

Really, Noah, what did you say?

I said, "Jesus, I like for you to be in my heart, and I like for you to be in our home, and I like you."

Elati Light Rail Facility Tour

We got to tour the Elati Light Rail Facility in Englewood today with our homeschool group. This is where they clean and do maintenance on the Denver light rail trains. 49 of us showed up for the tour.

We started out on a train going through the wash bay. Please note the speed limit for the wash bay! :o)

They move the "trucks" around on this thing...well, today it was kids!

Boys & trucks--that's what they call these things!
Big Ass Fan! That's the real name--from the manufacturer! :o)

Black Hands Drum Duo

We went to see Black Hands today at Aurora Community College. It was much better than the last place we saw them because we were able to sit close to the drums and really see and hear them well. Six of our homeschool families showed up; there were 21 of us! We all got up to dance and sing with them when they invited us.

They taught us an African welcome song and a couple of the plantation spiritual songs that kept them going when they were forced to work 18 hours a day with one meal and one drink of water for the whole day! It's amazing to hear stories of how they were worked throughout the week and then were still able to praise God, revel in their families, sing & dance for hours on Sunday. It's so hard to imagine and it brings tears to my eyes every time!

Ice Skating in Keystone, Colorado

We were in Keystone this week for the NSAA show. While Jason was busy, Noah got to have an ice skating lesson. He was so sure that he would be SO much better than the last time he tried it, that he was a little disappointed that he still had to try so hard! He did try, though, and had a good time.

Dot, dot, dot is too hot!

We got a new infrared heater to go with our solar and get us off of natural gas. I have been running it for the last 2 months, experimenting to see just how much of our house it will heat (it's only supposed to heat 1,000 sq. ft.). It has a thermostat that you set to your desired temperature. The heating element is either off or on, depending on the thermostat. It also goes into a "screen saver" mode where the numbers disappear and there are only 5 small dots showing.

Noah loves to get warm right in front of the heater and, sometimes, he'll sit down in front of it to play even if he's not cold. Last night, it was pretty toasty in the house and Noah was sitting right in front of the heater. He looked at me with a concerned face and said, "Mommy! Dot, dot, dot is TOO HOT!" :o)

Exercise is good for kids AND dogs!!!

We spent 2 1/2 hours at the dog park this afternoon. It was a mild and wonderful 66 degrees. Noah was on his bicycle, Goldie and I were hoofin' it. I walked so much that I got 2 blisters on my feet, but they were SO worth it! We walked from the parking lot at Chatfield State Park, under the C470 bridge, and back. Dogs have to be leashed on the bike path under C470 and there are signs telling you so. On the way back, we were reading the signs and one said that dogs could now be off their leash, but still had to be "under control" at all times. Noah said, "I don't think Goldie knows she's a dog."

Noah also got to watch a backhoe work on replacing a hydrant. We saw them starting on the way in and then we watched for 20 minutes on the way out. The 2 men decided that Noah should get to check out the backhoe, so they let him climb inside and sit in the seat. One of the men explained how all the controls work. It was so much fun and I think Noah would have been more outwardly excited if he hadn't been absolutely worn out from riding his bike for 2 1/2 hours straight!!!

Tonight at home, Noah and Goldie were both on their best behavior! Even when Ruby the cat was meowing and walking around teasing Goldie, she still just laid on her bed. Any other day, she would have chased Ruby as far as she possibly could!

Exercise is just good for everyone! I don't know how I forget sometimes! :o)

Midwest CEO

Midwest CEO is doing a story on Jason, so they had a photographer meet him in Vail for a quick photo shoot a couple of weeks ago. They're some good looking pictures! http://www.scottcramerphotography.com/midwest_ceo/

Jason sure will be a different looking CEO than the rest of the suits in this publication!! :o)
