Spring Celebration!

We went to Maura's house today to check for signs of spring. We learned about the vernal equinox, made a craft of the sun & earth and then explored the prairie to see what we could see. We found plants sprouting new green leaves, a grasshopper and a hawk working on his nest. Then we planted a pumpkin seed which is now growing in our kitchen window. We ended with a picnic lunch. It was a great day!

Where can a chicken cross the road?

Right here! The first sign is for an upcoming exit. The second one means that chickens AND people can cross the road!

Discovery Launch

We watched it today. Noah had lots of questions. It was really fun!

Surprise St. Patty's Day Celebration

We just happened upon a St. Patrick's Day celebration in Highlands Ranch on Sunday afternoon. Well, it was right in front of the bead store we were going to, so there was no missing it! They had a bouncy house and a cute little train that Noah rode 2 times. It was a fun surprise!

Looking out the side, watching the bump!

Heirloom Gardens

Noah and I are volunteering, and learning, this summer with a group called Heirloom Gardens. A few of the members are offering their entire yards for the group to dig up the grass and build gardens! Since we grow our own garden, we decided not to become members, but to help them out whenever we can.

It's quite an interesting idea, however I haven't gotten Jason talked into it yet! Here is Sundari's blog with more fun pictures of our day. There are also some pictures of their sweet baby goat they'll be picking up in a few weeks.

Therapy Chickens

I don't know if there ever was such a thing as therapy chickens, but there is now! We took our chicks over to Cody House and the residents LOVED them! Vergie even picked one up and bounced it on her hand! The chick wasn't sure what to think, but it survived. Noah was so proud to show them around to everyone!

Budding Engineer

Noah figured that if he doubled up his railroad tracks, he could make a "water tunnel" underneath the tracks. He spends hours designing, building and re-designing such things.

When we were driving on C470 the other day, Noah asked what made the road so bumpy. I told him that it was sun, wind and rain. He asked what about snow and I told him it was that too. He said he had a great idea--that "they" could build covers over the roads so all that stuff didn't make them so bumpy.

When we got home, he started building covers, with his blocks, over his train tracks and has spent many hours since then trying to figure out the best design. He's a tad obsessed! :o)

National Ice Core Laboratory

The tour of the National Ice Core Laboratory was very interesting! Jason and I have differing opinions on their "scientific estimates" of the ages of ice, the earth, etc., but that's OK! It was a lot of fun anyway!
I'm not sure if I've ever been in -36 degrees before, maybe once in Steamboat a loooong time ago, but it was very, very, very cold! I felt so sorry for the little cold children in our group, but they didn't seem to care at all!
Here is more information on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, where they are currently drilling.

When you're a chicken mama...

it is very important to teach your chicks to read. The best way for chicks to begin to learn is by their "mama" reading to them often. :o)

Sushiology with Master Chef Taro Arai

We had a most excellent class with Master Chef Taro Arai at Mikuni Park Meadows today! Despite most of the kids saying they didn't want to eat raw fish, they were all very interested and into the class. Master Chef made some kid friendly cuisine that everyone loved, but the best part was the personal story he told and the advice he gave to any budding entrepreneurs. It was very inspiring!
